Family Room Furniture: Tips For Arranging The Furniture In Your Family Room

Family room furniture is among the most important in the entire house. In today's home, the family room is usually THE gathering place for the entire family, the one spot, besides the kitchen, where everyone meets on a regular basis. It's a leisure sort of room, so therefore the furniture needs to be extra-comfy so that everyone can sprawl and lounge to their heart's content. But - how can we make it look good, as well as feel good?

Rules Of Family Room Furniture Arranging:

Rule number one: find a focal point of your family room. Furniture should be arranged in some order, so you have to start somewhere. Choose one the most important or dramatic focal points in the room (the fireplace, the window that brings in the outdoors, the big screen TV or a beautiful picture) and get to work!

Of course choosing the right focal point is only the beginning and to arrange your family room you’ll need something more than just a good starting point. You need proper furniture & solid furniture-arranging principles.

Rule number two: choose sofas and chairs with tables in mind. They have to match! Your family room should be a place of comfort, so the furniture must be not only fashionable, but also comfortable. The most common problem is that family room furniture pieces don’t match – chairs are too tall (or tables are too short, depending on your point of view.)

Reaching anything that lies on the table is a common nightmare of many family rooms (and my personal office! I have a couch but no easily accessible table on one end. Shopping, shopping, shopping).

The same holds true with the furniture size. If it’s too big, the family room will be claustrophobic, if it’s too small, it will look empty. You have to buy the furniture pieces that will fit right in the middle – not too big, not too small, just the right size. One tip: keep in mind that it’s easier to buy an additional piece of furniture than remove the large armchair that is just 15 inches too wide.

When you have your furniture, you will also have to arrange it. Here are some tips for family room furniture arranging.

Tip number one: place chairs close together to encourage interaction. If you place them apart, your family room will be silent. Furniture, if improperly placed, can kill any conversation.

Tip number two: space is important, so make sure there’s enough space to move freely. Remember you need legroom between a sofa and a table! Your family room furniture should be placed in such way that there’ll be no problem in moving through the room.
