CLASSIC WEATHERVANES: Weathervanes In Classic
Americana Styles
"Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it."
This famous statement was made by Mark Twain in a different century when the vast majority of people made their living from the land. For a farmer, the weather was critical and knowing the weather was not just helpful, but was often a matter of life and death! For instance, he 'knew' that the winter would be especially bad if:
* Tree bark was heaviest on the north side.
* There was a heavy crop of berries, acorns or pinecones
* The hickory nuts had a heavy shell
* The crop of holly and dogwood berries was heavy
* Sweet potatoes had a tougher-than-usual skin
* The onions grow more layers
Looked at in this way, the classic weathervane - a simple, yet sometimes uncannily accurate device - was almost scientific. . The weathervane is nothing more (or less) than a mechanical device attached to an elevated structure which rotates freely to show the direction of the wind. Conceptually simple, these charming, yet valuable works of art are centuries old, yet desired by many even today. What more could anyone ask?
